Just off the main highway from Lisbon, less than half an hour from Coimbra and approximately an hour before Porto, lies the classic spa resort of Curia and the Curia Palace Hotel. Genteel Portuguese families have been coming here for decades to enjoy the curative properties of the water. It is beautiful resort town, verdant and filled with water.

Curia is an excellent stopover, or a base from which to explore the region. It has the good fortune to be in Bairrada, a region of gastronomic delights, the most important being the most famous suckling pig in Portugal, traditionally enjoyed with the local white or red sparkling wine.

This is an important wine producing area, offering visits and tastings at the local farms and cellars, with the wine route taking one through spectacular forest and mountain scenery. If one explores a bit wider, this beautiful region has many undiscovered treasures, such as empty, golden beaches and traditional, unspoilt villages plus many other justly famous sites, such as Coimbra, the Roman site at Conimbriga and the Bussaco Forest.
