Hotels in Viseu Portugal
High in the Beira Alta region, on the highway linking the coastal areas of
Portugal to Salamanca, lies the historic hilltop city of Viseu, now a substantial regional capital. This is an ancient site, with evidence of a large Roman garrison settlement and with large parts of the city’s original granite walls still standing.
Any visit here should include a ramble through the enchanting little alleys that finally open up onto stately squares. Passing imposing ancient palaces, churches and convents, you’ll inevitably reach the main square on the highest point of Viseu and here, in addition to the beautiful views, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the most impressive cathedrals in Portugal.
This cathedral is also considered the spiritual heart of the Dão winemaking region. A perfect way of enjoying the beautiful countryside, the wine and superb gastronomy at the same time is to follow the Dão Wine Route, which will take you thorough this bucolic landscape to some of the most important and interesting wine farms. Another major attraction is the rugged mountain landscape of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
With its convenient access, beautiful centre and luxurious accommodation, Viseu is the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating region.
