Hotels in Évora, on Portugal's Alentejo plain
In the heart of the beautiful golden plains of the
Alentejo stands its monumental capital, Évora. A UNESCO world heritage site by virtue of being the best example of a golden age Portuguese city, this city museum’s millennia of history are in evidence everywhere you go.
Évora was already ancient when the Romans occupied it, but it is their Temple, also known as the Temple of Diana, situated on the highest point of the city, which is today its most visited site. Évora’s Cathedral, started in the twelfth century and only finished almost a century later and a Chapel richly decorated with skulls and bones are just two more of the wealth of historic attractions here.
Évora is also the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. The town of Arraiolos is only a short distance to the north and is famous for its superb handmade carpets. To the east, in the centre of the wine producing area, and towards the west, around the enchanting hilltop village of Montemor-o-Novo, one finds beautiful scenery and many megalithic monuments.
You’ll be enchanted by everything Évora has to offer.
